IRP

In Oder to operate a vehicle you need a License Plate, because you travel in Different states and the License plate is issued by your base State. In order to get a License Plate, you have to set up an IRP (The International Registration Plan), account. IRP, is agreement among states, of the United States and provinces of Canada, so that the license fees can be collected by the base state for all the jurisdiction based on the miles driven or distance covered in each state and on that basis distributed to all jurisdictions. The good thing about IRP is even though the vehicle travels in different jurisdiction the Carrier get only one license plate and a Cab card for each Vehicle.
The vehicles that are used for commercial transportation that fall in this category are:
A power unit (Tractor Only) with two axles and has a gross vehicle weight or registered weight in excess of 26,000 pounds, or 11,793.401 kilograms; or

A Tractor used in combination (Tractor and Trailer or Trailers) and the weight of the combination exceeds 26,000 pounds or 11,793.401 kilograms gross weight of the combination.

IFTA is the short for International Fuel Tax Agreement. If you operate in Multiple Sates in USA and Canadian provinces you require an IFTA permit. IFTA agreement was to simplify the Fuel reporting, instead of reporting to all the states individually through which you had traveled, you just report and pay to your base State and that State in return distributes to the states you traveled through prorated on the miles traveled through each state.
Once a Carrier gets their IFTA license it Comes with two decals for each vehicle to be placed on both sides of the vehicle as explained on the Decals. IFTA requires to file a fuel and mileage report every quarter
